Whispers adds to my Mahony musings

(No, this isn’t an offbeat post!)
Veteran Vatican-watcher and expert Church-in-America-analyst Rocco Palmo (who writes at Whispers in the Loggia) has contributed a lengthy post devoted to the rumor I first broke that a successor has been chosen for Cardinal Mahony following an expedited timeframe.
You can tell from the sheer depth and breath of Rocco’s reflections that he does this sort of research and reporting full time.
I’ll only excerpt a part of what he wrote, notably the section where, matching my discovery of his Facebook profile, Rocco points out Mahony also has a blog:
“…. while a putative version of the shortlist has made the rounds, given Benedict’s commitment to intense personal study of case-files and making his choices his own, especially for major assignments, all bets are genuinely off until the Apartment has spoken. As for what’s already on-record, Mahony let slip in a recent posting on his new blog that 2010 would be “my final full year” as head of his hometown fold, American Catholicism’s progressive seat and one of the global church’s most complex, energetic and diverse diocesan operations.”
That’s just a taste of what Rocco has to add. Do go read the rest if you are curious.

Y’kno, I’ve read Rocco for quite a while, and never really got any liberal wind from him until this post. I think it’s because I expect people to just bash bash bash those “progressive” bishops. Mahony has been a much better bishop than many including most of the other Jadot’s Boys bishops, even if that yellow armadillo of a cathedral is the ugliest building ever built
Brian C – I agree. Was working with the language repeated to me, but will try to use “orthodox” over “conservative” in the future, because – as you made the point – it is more accurate.
To expand on BlindFaith’s post, I wish that the term ‘orthodox’ was more frequently used instead of ‘conservative’ to describe the the type of bishop that I believe many are hoping and praying for as Mahony’s successor. Using modern political terminology, orthodox Catholics are conservative on abortion and marriage, but can be liberal on the death penalty and immigration (for example). I wish that political terminology was not used as the primary term to describe degree of devotion to the magisterium.
You are missing the most obvious appointment, Samuel Aquila. Born in LA, native son, hispanic, and speaks excellent spanish. He also makes frequnt trips back to LA and was just there recently. He has made vocations bloom which is what LA sorely needs.

Rocco Palmo a liberal? Wow, that’s a newsflash. I read his blog “religiously” and, while a conservative myself, and quite sensitive to leftward bias, have never gotten even a whiff of such from the eminently fair Mr. Palmo. In fact, probably the finest piece of reporting I’ve read in Whispers was a long, glowing, and profoundly engrossing piece on the elevation of Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Houston—a traditional bishop to be sure. I sincerely believe Mr. Palmo’s only bias is that he deeply loves his church, and, I suspect, all of us within it. I think I’ve heard something like that somewhere…
Rocco kind of tipped his hand as a liberal when he kept saying Archbishop Marini was not going to be replaced as papal MC. He kept insisting, “Marini’’s still there in several posts to the point I thought it was baiting and childish. He went radio silent on that issue when Marini was sacked and replaced by the traditional, orthodox, and liturgically
correct Msgr. Marini.
I’ve just posted lots on the reports about the possible successors and background about who they are:

arden: “They better hurry up and pick this coadjutor, because though the pope probably would not force Mahoney to retire early, the Los Angeles District Attorney just might.”
Sorry, arden. Though it’s popular and commonplace to say otherwise, no one has ever shown that Cardinal Mahony violated any secular law.
Los Angeles County D.A. Steve Cooley, 7/17/07: “We have not had one report from any source, including [abuse attorney John] Manly, to suggest that any violation of [the mandatory reporting] statute, that California statute that makes that an affirmative duty.” http://www.themediareport.com/topic-john-manly/manly-cooley.htm
We will see what glory our most gracious Holy Father will bestow on the local church of the city of the the angels. Point to be made…LOOK AT THE LOCAL CHURCH IN BELGIUM. A shining gem of the liberals is being replaced by the most traditionalist found thoughout those lands. It would be an honor for that local church to be lead by a gifted and talented and above all orthodox HISPANIC BISHOP. Ironically that the sister church to the north of us has always claimed to be as diverse as the US church, they just received their first non-anglo (white) episcopal elevation. Pray that this opening will bear forth a new advent of renewal and not religious education conferences that look like a treckky gathering (sorry to the trecks
Yes, I agree with Colin and Blind Faith, where did anyone get the idea that Rocco was some kind of flaming liberal just because he doesn’t bash Mahony every chance he gets?
Completely off topic, but worth it:

Say some prayers for Dr. McInerny.
They better hurry up and pick this coadjutor, because though the pope probably would not force Mahoney to retire early, the Los Angeles District Attorney just might.
Just a thought I have, but I am wondering who we are as a people this day and age in Amereica? Why does everything always come down to labling eachother a liberal or a conservative? Why do people have to hate liberals? Why do we the voting people allow this to go on? Why do we let someone else define us in every instance because we are open perhaps to idea’s that make others angry? This country remains divided and we nourish that divide every single day. It’s so sad. It makes me want to give up and say, who cares? Who really could care? Afterall everything is so corrupted in the voting process. I mean absolutly every aspect of it. First lobbyists run our counry and we let it go on. Second, our representatives do not have term limits, and we let it go on. We have a Congress where neither party will pass anything that works for the people, and we sit back and take sides and let it go on. What a country.
Off topic but I thought you’d like to alert your readers to this sad news: Dr Ralph McInerny, Philosopher and Novelist, has passed away.

Rocco’s coverage as a liberal slant? Please. He’s the best person on these shores for information on the Vatican’s activities.
As far as not posting all the negatives of liberal prelates, I think that’s called avoiding criticizing someone if you can. Just b/c he mentions Mahoney doesn’t mean he (or anyone else for that matter) has to bash him.
Reading Rocco I’ve become more and more convinced that he has some serious liberal tendancies. As much as he tries to make it look like he’s just telling the facts, his dislike of traditional Prelates comes through, and he goes out of his way to defend the liberals, conveniently leaving out their many failings. This article is an excellent example.
Reading Palmo’s article gives me the bad chills of his impending beatification and canonization of Cardinal Mahoney. Please give me a break….enough is enough. It’s about time we have a holy and faithful shepard here in LA. Millions of millions of souls are waiting to be saved here.

I love what Rocco Palmo writes, this in-depth write up was great! Im still waiting for him to say something about my diocese getting a new bishop…
Between you and Rocco saying it, sounds like we’ll know something in about a month. Interesting that the terna was approved by the Cardinal. Obviously, that doesn’t mean he got to choose the three, but I’m sure other commenters here are a little uneasy by the mere fact that he got to approve the list submitted.
