Alito & Others: Fact-Checking Obama

by Thomas Peters on January 28th, 2010

I have  few posts up on the APP blog today, fact-checking Obama’s claims last night:

  1. Alito v. Obama – What’s Not True? (includes video of Alito’s “Not True” comment)
  2. Klein on the State of the Union
  3. Video: Cato Institute Scholars Analyze the 2010 State of the Union Address

PolitiFact and the AP also have articles up today fact-checking Obama’s claims.

Good point Andy. I didn’t mean to imply the statements were made on the same level of civility, just on the same level of accuracy.

“You lie!”
“Not true!”

I suspect the list will grow.

I’ve noticed people making this connection, too, but I don’t think it’s apt. The “you lie” moment, while accurate, was a blatant interruption of Obama’s speech and was quite rude. The “not true” statement was not an interruption, and was actually responding to being singled out. Alito can’t be called rude for simply defending himself when childishly called out in such a forum.

It looked like Obama was intimidating the the Supreme Court for the Citizens United vs. the Federal Election Commission decision. Especially since he did it in public and challenged the Congress to end run the decision. As if saying, “With all due deference to the separation of powers,” would soften the blow of his scolding and challenge.
So, when Obama said he believes the decision “will open the floodgates for special interests…,” could he have meant unions? For example, the SEIU Purple People-Beaters, who seem to be the president’s personal praetorians? Naaaaa, probably not.
