Abp. Burke gets bumped up (again), and Abp. Dolan begins seeing Red

by Thomas Peters on July 28th, 2010

Diane at Te Deum Laudamus is doing a great job of keeping track of all the new responsibilities being given to (former) Archbishop (of St. Louis) Raymond Burke over in Rome:

1. June 2008: Appointed as Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura
2. October 19, 2009: Appointed a member of the Congregation for Bishops
3. July 6, 2010: Appointed a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship
4. July 26, 2010: Appointed a member of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints

This avalanche of appointments would seem to play against the gambit posed by liberal Catholics that Archbishop Burke was summoned to Rome because his orthodoxy was mistrusted here in the United States.

Meanwhile, I have it from an unconfirmed source that five new Cardinals will be named in October, and that the first one being mentioned is Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York City. More on that if some of my other sources come through with the (spiritual) goods!

I’m not understanding the logic with Dolan being elevated to Cardinal when Egan is only 78. In two years there could be another consistory, at which time it would make sense for Dolan to get the red hat.

I’m puzzled about the Detroit vs. Houston matter….

Houston-Galveston has 1.1 million Catholics with 442 priests and 149 parishes (2009 data).

Someone clue me in – LOL
Detroit has 1.4 million Catholics with 694 priests and 303 parishes (2006 data).

Vincent, are you referring to the Nationals Stadium Mass that Pope Benedict officiated? I doubt anything took place there that wasn’t approved by Rome’s MC. Let’s not forget Archbishop Wuerl was appointed to DC by Benedict himself to navigate the Church in the nation’s capital. Every occupant of St. Matthew’s cathedra has been elevated. With Cardinal McCarrick now superannuated, Wuerl’s red hat is a matter of when, not if.

You do make a good call on Houston taking Detroit’s place in the college. However, unless you’re simply skeptical of the timing of an elevation, I wouldn’t be so skeptical of Atlanta. It’s booming. I could also see Miami, the gateway to the Americas, getting the nod instead. But I think you’re probably right that we won’t see that shift just yet. Maybe next time around, particularly when Cardinal Law gives up his vote and so that there are no shifts in cardinalatial sees.

My deep skepticism rests on the idea of Archbishop O’Brien being elevated, especially in a consistory held before Keeler reaches 80 next spring. Historically, there’s no guarantee Baltimore’s ordinary receives that privilege. Plus, particularly with Dolan being elevated before Egan superannuates, one could say that takes Cardinal Maida’s spot for now, and then Archbishop Burke would take Cardinal McCarrick’s. And if there is a third American elevation, I can’t imagine it not being Wuerl or an archbishop from the Deep South. Then that puts Archbishop at no younger than 73 for the next consistory, hypothetically held at the end of 2012, where he would then be closer to 74, and that would make him the oldest ordinary elevated in American history. Once more, with Baltimore having no guarantee of a red hat, I just don’t see Archbishop O’Brien receiving the honor.

“The man [Burke] clearly was not well suited to a ministry of the pastoral care of souls.”

This comment betrays a terribly shallow understanding of the real nature of the cura animarum.

Good for Archbishop Burke we need another 100 of him!
As for Archbishop Dolan….. has anyone been following the reporting from Michael Voris
over at RealCatholicTV.com???? Why the apparent outright and public acceptance of homosexuals in St. Francis Xavier parish? Shameful!
