Update: Gov. Christie Vetoes Millions to Planned Parenthood

by Thomas Peters on July 28th, 2010

A good reminder that electing Catholic officials who adhere to Catholic principles has good consequences for society, and for the most vulnerable in particular:

”As New Jersey’s Republican Governor Chris Christie continues to fulfill a campaign pledge to restore state government to fiscal sanity, he has vetoed a bill that would have dedicated $7.5 million in state to “family planning” clinics, most of which are run by Planned Parenthood.

New Jersey’s Star Ledger reported that Christie in his veto message said that “the state simply cannot fund every worthy program” and would not restore $7.5 million for family planning clinics that he had cut from the state’s budget for fiscal year 2011.

Marie Tasy, executive director of New Jersey Right to Life, praised Christie for standing by his decision to cut funds for Planned Parenthood.” (LSN)

Planned Parenthood and their ilk often make the claim that abortion and contraception are “cost-saving measures” (the catholyc Nancy Pelosi claimed that Stimulus funding for contraception made sense for this reason), because – obviously – contraception and abortion result in less pregnancies and more dead babies … so there are less costs associated with caring for and raising these new human lives. Christie’s veto of the legislation is therefore not, in their eyes, a move to limit government expense, but a choice to raise the costs of government.

What a sad vision, to see innocent human life as a “cost” on a financial sheet.

Contrast Catholic Gov Christie who vetoed giving millions to Planned Parenthood with the so-called “Catholic” Pelosi who just received an award from Planned Parenthood! REAL Catholics can do much good, while Cafeteria Catholics can and do much evil. Too bad ALL the Bishops can’t see this and do what they’re supposed to do! Thousands of babies are dying everyday with the help of these Cafeteria Catholics!!!!

It appears that Gov. Christie has done more for the cause of life by this one action than have many other politicians and officeholders who make a much bigger show of being pro-life. And to think that just a few months ago there were people complaining that he wasn’t pro-life enough. Yes, he may not be perfectly pro-life but every little bit helps.
I know that too often politicians who bill themselves as pro-life turn out to be disappointments (see: Bart Stupak, Ben Nelson, Bob Casey Jr.) but sometimes it works the other way: politicians who claim to be or once were pro-choice (like George H.W. Bush, Mitt Romney, and Ronald Reagan, who signed one of the earliest legal abortion laws while governor of California, but was a strong supporter of life while president) can turn out to be better than expected.

He did not call Planned Parenthood a “worthy program”- He simply said very prudently that he cannot fund every “worthy program” …which is true. And if you know anything about this guy, I’m sure there was a glint of happy sarcasm underlining the comment. We need to be as smart/cunning as they are if we are going to pervail!!!!! St. Theresa of Avila would be proud. This guy is the real deal – I would vote for him for president…you should see some of his other stuff, he is right on!

Jeffrey,
I would interpret this through the lens ‘watch what they do, not what they say’. Often times this applies to a politician who talks good rhetoric but takes no action. In this case, while his words ‘worthy program’ are discouraging, his actions ‘vetoing funding’ are what is important.

I pray for the conversion of LeRoy Carhart, Cecil Richards, and President Obama in each rosary. I also pray for the overturning of Roe and the closing of Planned Parenthood. I am happy to see that God has answered my prayers with the latter, and continues to work on all of the others.

Please join me in your rosaries for these intentions. There is NOTHING that God cannot do!

Well… I wouldn’t call Planned Parenthood a “worthy program”. Although I suppose that was necessary politic-speech.
