Pope Benedict’s Baseball Cap Makes Waves

by Thomas Peters on July 27th, 2010

The photo I chose for yesterday’s Papist Picture of the Day is making waves today. The UK tabloids happily chirped little editorials such as this:

“Pope Benedict donned the trendy hat as he walked around his estate in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome.”

The latest papal accessory has also inspired the inevitable photoshop entries:

It’s good to see people having a bit of fun with this (and in good taste!).

This is going too far! Foolish people don’t know that his all-white cap was digitally altered into a “Indians” baseball cap. Note: Pope Benedict XVI is on vacation in this photo so an all-white cap is perfectly fine. People never mock the leaders of other religions like Gandi or Muhammad. Catholicism should be giving equal respect. Its okay to “joke” about certain things but when it leads people to lose respect and ultimately faith, its gone too far! Neither Catholics or Non-Catholics should be allowed to do this.

Wow! The Pope is a Cleveland Indians fan?! We need his prayers. Go tribe!

Glad to see his holiness roots for an underdog. Although, I agree, padres or cardinals would have been more obvious.

I’m reminded of the Scripture passage where the woman touches Christ’s clothing to be healed. I wonder if I could mail the Pope a Royals cap!

I agree. Why not San Diego?

I think we need to see either a Padres or Cardinals hat.

Surely he would want to play for the Saint Louis Cardinals instead!

[...] Thanks to the good folks at Catholic Vote Action for picking up on this. Let’s hope it turns into a respectful, but entertaining trend. July [...]
