Video: CNN quotes AmP in story about St. Xavier’s NYC Gay Pride march participation

by Thomas Peters on June 28th, 2010

My friend Matt Balan at NewsBusters alerted me to this video/article on CNN which quotes my comments made in February about the “gay-friendly” St. Francis Xavier parish in New York City. Here is a screenshot from the CNN broadcast:

And here is the video:

Some things to note:

  • Our email-writing campaign to the Archdiocese of New York may indeed have contributed to Archbishop Dolan’s decision to contact St. Francis Xavier and prohibit them from carrying a banner in this year’s gay pride parade, so once again – thank you for taking the time to let the Archbishop know about this problem!
  • We were sadly correct that St. Francis Xavier encourages its homosexual parishioners to lead an active homosexual lifestyle, which is harmful to them personally and betrays the witness to the teachings of Jesus about chastity that Catholic parishes and priests are called to provide to all persons, homosexual or heterosexual
  • What faithful Catholics say matters. If Catholics refuse to speak out about the moral controversies of our day we will be drowned-out by those who disagree with the Church’s teaching, resulting in more harm coming to persons because the truth has not been proclaimed and defended

Let us continue to pray for the pastor and parishioners of St. Francis Xavier parish. They proclaim themselves to be a gay-friendly parish – may they come to see that to be truly gay-friendly they must be willing to open themselves to the truth about the purpose of human sexuality and the authentic path to human flourishing that only Jesus Christ reveals.

As I put it, we are not judges, but fruit inspectors.

LOL! You sure are. I find the Catholic Right has a little too much interest in doing these” inspections.”

What the heck is a gay lifestyle anyway? I’ve been gay for 41 years. I’m middle class, college educated, in a loving relationship and I care for my elderly parents. I pay my taxes, I vote, I buy groceries. I tip 20% at restaurants. Oh, and I go to church.

Oh Mr. Monk, If you remember the stories of Christ eating with the sinners, he rebuked and called them out on thier sins. So would he be eating with them, of course, would he be calling them out on thier sins, yes he would.
St. Francis Xavier I can bet is not at all pleased that his name is being used in such away, and definatly would not want it being marched in an active “we promote the gay lifestyle and everything that goes with it” parade.

Terry, you have the wrong St Francis Xavier!! That one is in Brooklyn. SFX in NYC offers an hour of Reconciliation each week, 2-3pm.

Mr. Monk, I don’t think anyone here is judging those at St. Xavier. However, There is a big difference between accepting those with a same-sex tendency and accepting the active homosexual lifestyle, which is what is promoted in gay pride parades. By walking in the gay pride parade with that banner they are saying that the Catholic church accepts the same sinful and disordered activities that this parade promotes. That is scandalous and is a lie.

The youtube was a riot. I particularly enjoyed the “priestess: running around with the incense. I think Archbishop Dolan has his hands full. Instead of dedicating the Church he should close it.

What a difficult situation! After watching the rededication ceremony of S.F.X. parish, I realise how close these poor folks are to coming to a Christian understanding of the disordered condition, namely homo-sexuality. With a few well-placed hard sayings, a few excommunications, and some philosophical instruction. Yerra, bend the iron slowly. In this regard, I can understand the instruction not to carry a banner with the parish name on it. And so, It is a grand thing to see the archbishop acting as a father and shepherd trusting on prayer. I am sure he is not going to let his flock run amok into oblivion.

“True, but he would be calling them to repentance. Even a cursory look at the history of St. FX reveals that it is either a). incompetent at ministering to homosexuals or b.) rejects the truth about homosexual acts and is confirming people in their sin. ”

I wonder if there is a Courage chapter at SFX?

“BTW, I don’t support the gay community (one “mortal sin” less?), but I don’t think is something wrong; what I can’t stand is intolerance.”

Read the Catechism. Homosexuals are certainly tolerated. They are welcomed and called to live a better life.

However, what they really want is for the Church to approve their behavior, and that the Church cannot do.

“Who’s job is it to point the finger at “the speck in his brother’s eye?”

The problem is, you and the people at SFX do not believe they have specks in their eyes.

Mr. Monk, I disagree. Jesus would not be in the midst of the March. I’m not sure which Gospel accounts you’re reading, but everything I see doesn’t have Jesus celebrating the sinful actions of others. He eats with sinners, yes, but at the same time he is teaching them to end their sinful ways.
Jesus: You’ve sinned, and I want to teach you how to stop. Leave all you have and come and follow me.
Gay Pride: You’re fine how you are. Do whatever you want, it doesn’t really matter anyway. Everything is good.

KCHawk-
I really liked your answers.

Mr. Monk-
I loved your show!! I humbly offer an answer to your question. “Would Jesus be in the midst of the March, eating with people at the table of the Xavier parish?” To my recollection, the gospels record Jesus in only one ‘parade’. On Palm Sunday, there was a parade of sorts where sinners celebrated Jesus, but Jesus was never in a parade that celebrated sin.

The real question is…. Would Jesus be in the midst of the March, eating with people at the table of the Xavier parish? From all gospel accounts the answer is, “Yes”–even if they did not drop everything to follow him through the narrow gate.

True, but he would be calling them to repentance. Even a cursory look at the history of St. FX reveals that it is either a). incompetent at ministering to homosexuals or b.) rejects the truth about homosexual acts and is confirming people in their sin.

Interestingly, the Catholic Church canonizes saints, yet says nothing about who might be in hell. Why can’t Christians do the same?

No one has made a judgement about the state of anyone’s soul. As I put it, we are not judges, but fruit inspectors. St. FX has been dishing out bad fruit for awhile.

Being curious by nature, I looked around a bit on St. Francis Xavier’s parish website. I did find this very interesting:
“Reconciliation is offered each Saturday from 4:30 pm to 4:45 PM or anytime by appointment with a priest.” [http://www.stfxbrooklyn.org/reconciliation.asp?menu=SubMenuItem33]
The sacrament of reconciliation for the whole parish is offered only 15 minutes a week? Hmmmm….

Justin, do we celebrate fanaticism? Yes!* Fanaticism is a disorder and yet fanatics are more than welcome in the Catholic Church. And Warren’s comment could be inserted here:
““There, there – you’re fine. Don’t be concerned, the pain will pass. Take a pill.” When the time comes that it’s too late to operate and the disease has taken over, the doctor merely shrugs and comments – “Oh well, he brought this on himself.””

Where has tolerance gone?
BTW, I don’t support the gay community (one “mortal sin” less?), but I don’t think is something wrong; what I can’t stand is intolerance.
– Nature does not celebrate homosexuality? I think that if nature ruled everything we would just get food and preserve mankind (without being married).
– Just remember, fanaticism is dangerous.

Yeah I am really confused as to why Archbishop Dolan doesn’t come out and say:

1. St. Francis Xavier must get rid of it’s Catholic Lesbians and Gay Catholics groups, or Fr. Costantino will be put on pastoral probation.
2. Fr. Costantino is incorrect that the archdiocese is primarily concerned with “promiscuity”. The archdiocese is concerned with unchastity. Period.

It seems really easy. I love Archbishop Dolan but I have to say I am really disappointed that the only thing he did is say they can’t have a banner. I cannot believe that Fr. Costantino went on CNN and challenged Church teaching and is not being seriously reprimanded. He made it clear in his email responses to me that he has no desire to act in accordance with the Church. Bam. Violation of his vow of obedience. Why is this still an issue? Appalling.
