Video: Hyundai’s blasphemous “Soccer Mass” ad for World Cup

by Thomas Peters on June 13th, 2010

Watching the World Cup this weekend? You may have been forced to watch this:

As a friend wrote me, “They pretty much make fun of the entire Mass.”

Think about it, the only reason anyone could possibly think this is clever is if they like and approve of making fun of Catholics and the things we hold dear. And once again, as I point out almost every time I have to mention something offensive to Catholics, I’m still waiting for an equal-opportunity offending corporation to create an ad that entirely makes fun of a Jewish or Muslim ceremony.

It’s time for open season on Catholics to end. It’s time for this “last acceptable prejudice” to vanish.

If you want to let Hyundai know how its ad is having the opposite from its intended effect, send them an email at consumeraffairs@hmausa.com.

I think the offense taken is not warranted as the religion depicted in Hundai ad actually exists in Argentina.

Hi, David!

The many faith communities provide a lot of public services. Don’t forget that.

“Jack – 43% of Americans pay no federal income tax. Should they be similarly barred from politics? Really, what a stupid argument.”

Bad retort, I’m afraid. 43% of Americans don’t have specific EXEMPTIONS from paying not just income taxes but property taxes codified into law, as churches do. We should remember that this exemption is a privilege, not a right. There’s nothing in the First Amendment’s right to free exercise of religion that requires the government to let churches go tax-free.

Agree with Jack. Geez, I’m Catholic and I was amused by the ad.

Let’s review:
Mexico, Uruguay, France, Argentina, Slovenia, Paraguay, Italy, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Honduras, Chile, and Switzerland. Can anybody tell me the largest religion in these countries? Why would anyone try to offend a religion which makes up a majority of the viewership. Again, this is overreacting, which makes me bash my head at some of the thick headed people who practice our religion.

With all due respect, perhaps you should just grow up. There is no “war on Christianity” or Catholicism. And as for “Catholic Vote Action”, maybe your churches should start paying taxes before interfering in secular politics. Just a thought.

I received the same reply as indicated in the previous comments after I sent an email.
Apology accepted.
