Revealed: Final candidates for next Catholic University of America President

by Thomas Peters on June 8th, 2010

A couple weeks ago I published a scoop that the next President of the Catholic University of America would be a lay person, and that the search had been narrowed down to two male candidates.

Now it appears very certain who these final two candidates are: Jim Towey of Saint Vincent College (left) and John Garvey, dean of the Boston College law school (right).

Towey served under President George Bush as director of the Office of Faith-Based and Community initiatives, and Garvey served as assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States.

I’d be curious to see which of these candidates AmP readers think CUA should go with, and what more they may know about either or both of these men.

Blueandwhite’s sarcasm is funny, but he/she seems to be coming from a standpoint of Hitchensism – “Mother Teresa didn’t love the poor, she loved poverty.” No, Mother Teresa embraced poverty as a theological counsel (as all religious are supposed to), but she loved the poor. Strange, thinking that it’s more that someone live forever than for them to have needs met in a terrestrial life which is already, for each one of us, biodegradable. (snort) Who came up with that one? Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, etc., are absolutely important, but those aren’t the Missionaries of Charity’s charism. There are legitimate Catholic criticisms of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, but Hitchensism isn’t one of them.

Oh, dear, I forgot! For all of you out there who think any Democrat is the Anti-christ, may I remind you that Jim Towey is a registered Democrat. Yep! Google it.

BlueandWhite _ this remark of yours from one of your posts, is priceless. You had to have taken Dr. W’s Satire class…. your use of irony and sarcasm here approaches a professional level. “Mother Teresa worked with the poor and destitute of Calcutta. Jim Towey, seeing a complete lack of spiritual and financial poverty in the Appalachian region surrounding St. Vincent College, helped send students halfway around the world to India where they could do the most good.”
Having said that, you are one funny person!
Now for those who will take your remarks seriously (those, at least, who suffer for want of a sense of humor) . monks, students, alum, nuns, since 1846, have been working to relieve the poverty in the Appalachian Region. The Benedictine order has established many parishes and schools in the region. It established farms and mines and provided employment to many in the local communities. Towey brought nothing, that is, absolutely nothing, that contributed to the spritural growth of Saint Vincent College. All as intact before he came, and will remain so after he goes.

Dear cuastudent:
Garvey’s credentials are excellent and indicative of a consistent success in a career in academe, in the classroom and administratively. I have nothing personal against Towey. I am simply being objective by saying that Garvey is by far the better candidate for the presidency of CUA… an institution known to all to be one of the great schools in the United States – and it should so remain with the choice of a president wtih Garvey’s credentials who can do the place justice. We should all sit back, pour a nice glass of ice-cold Pepsi-Cola (or drink of choice) and wait for the official announcement.

Hello,
I am a recent graduate of Saint Vincent. I’m particularly concerned about what Mr. Towey did to Saint Vincent College and how that might play out if he gets the presidency at CUA. To be fair, he was always a friendly man to me and most other students, and I am of the opinion that he always believed that what he was doing was the right thing, however misguided that might have been. Towey did bring money in for my school, and he did make things more orthodox (at times somewhat alarmingly, even for a very conservative Catholic) … but my question is, at what cost? Many of our faculty and students (save for a few) were bullied into silence by Towey and his cronies. Particular members of the faculty were admonished for speaking out against Towey and his decisions, and while I won’t go into detail about the Fr. Mark Gruber case, I might say that it wasn’t handled in a decent or even legal manner– resulting in an entire priest’s life ruined for politics. Upstanding Catholic colleges should not be run by fear and intimidation, and it is embarrassing that Saint Vincent’s image was marred by such a regime during the past four years. CUA, you’ve been warned by so many. I do hope you make the right choice.

Wow. Reading the nasty banter going on here, I forgot that I was visiting a Catholic blog. I am not sure why some of the people who post here would even be interested in reading this blog. Just because you are anonymous on the internet typing stuff on a screen instead of face to face doesn’t mean you should be rude and disrespectful to the people you are addressing! We are the Body of Christ here after all….

As a student at CUA, I can say that the majority of the student body is very accepting of all types of people (like true Catholicism teaches), unlike many of those who have been posting on this forum who I don’t think are doing anything but giving a poor name to this truly great and accepting institution. So if it is true about Garvey being named, can anyone say anything credible about him rather than simply bashing Towey or ‘liberals’ because they don’t like Towey?

Guest, how sad if you are right. Not only has Mr. Garvey never met Mother Teresa (unlike Jim Towey!), but he is from Boston. Everyone knows that “Catholic” and “Boston” cannot exist in the same sentence without adding the phrase “not truly” before the claim of faith. Boston “Catholics,” when it comes to abortion and same-sex relationships, manage to both hate the sin AND love the sinner at the same time as outlined in DC’s post on the non-discrimination policy. I cannot think of a less Christ-like approach to the faith. Mr. Garvey also donated to John Kerry’s presidential campaign, and it is obvious that he did so solely due to the pro-/anti-life issue as it is really the main (read: only important!) issue facing the lives of everyday Americans.

I recently had a flight connect through Boston and, though I never left the airport, I went to confession the day I arrived back home. I felt dirty to have even been in a city where such a corrupt version of Catholicism runs rampant and unchecked.

According to the Provincial of the Jesuits of New England, it appears as though BC’s Dean has gotten the nod… We shall see!
