Exclusive: Cardinal Mahony replacement chosen, announcement to be made soon

by Thomas Peters on January 21st, 2010

I am hearing, on reliable authority, that the Cardinal Archbishop of Los Angeles, Roger Mahony, has approved a coadjutor bishop recently selected for him by the Holy See. This news – and the name – will be publicly announced “soon.”

This new bishop, once announced and appointed, will automatically succeed Mahony as the Archbishop of Los Angeles as soon as Mahony retires, presumably before Mahony’s mandatory retirement at age 75 (February 27, 2011). Mahony has said that the current class of seminarians will be the last one he personally ordains.

Some of the faculty at St. John’s Seminary – where new priests for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are trained – have expressed concern that the new coadjutor bishop will lean more “conservative” than his predecessor, and some have even threatened to resign or retire if this turns out to be the case.

Amid speculation about who has been chosen as the next Archbishop of LA and when he will be announced, let’s remember to keep the faithful of the Archdiocese in our prayers, and pray especially for a smooth transition in the coming months.

update – this post has been picked up by Deacon Kandra at BeliefNet, Catholic Culture news briefs, and Gene Maddaus at the LA Weekly blog.

update 2 – Los Angeles spokesman denies my Cardinal Mahony claim (and I respond)

Please replace Archbishop Mahoney as soon as possible, let every living soul that support him move on as well. Of all the people that have basked in the California spot lot from Governor Brown to Governor Schwarzenegger and Archbishop Mahoney they are collectively responsible along with the people of California for this kind of left wing liberal idocracy. Archbishop Mahoney needs to insert the word “legal” when he discusses immigration. Anyone not willing to follow due process necessary for obtaining legal immigration status is not generally interested in doing anything legal. On top of legal we now need to consider ’sound’ as even gay unions are seen as legal. Archbishop Mahoney needs to leave as fast as he can.

God bless our Cardinal Archbishop Mahoney who has done so much for the City of The Angels.

“Some of the faculty at St. John’s Seminary … have expressed concern that the new coadjutor bishop will lean more “conservative” … and some have even threatened to resign or retire if this turns out to be the case.” DON’T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU ON THE WAY OUT!!!!

Dear God, let this unknown coadjutor bishop uphold Catholic teaching and orthodoxy, let him demand reverent liturgy instead of the happy-clappy-crappy stuff, non-trash music instead of banal guitar-cantor schlock, and PLEASE Dear God PLEASE let him be friendly and sympathetic toward those who want the Mass of the extraordinary form!!!

The word really is not so much conservative as it is orthodox. The more disgruntled seminary professors who run out of town the better. Hopefully the new archbishop wil get rid of the junk and put in good men.

Liberal faculty in the seminary threaten to quit. Good-bye!
