Health Care: Bishops vs. Nuns
At the 11th hour of the health care battle, liberal religious sisters are splitting from the bishops of the United States and are openly lobbying for Congress to pass the anti-life legislation that is currently being consider. In the words of Archbishop Chaput, Don’t be misled.
There is an avalanche of statements being published on both “Catholic” sides of this issue, so I will only have time to fact-check and refute two important trends. In the meantime, see this post where a friend of mine explains, in less than 150 words, why Catholics must oppose this current legislation.
This is the lie that Sister Carol Keehan (head of the Catholic Health Association) is telling bishops and representatives in Congress – that the current Senate language is acceptable:
“I need to tell you that the information about our position [in your blog] is incorrect. I know that it is what Cardinal George’s statement says but that is not our position. We believe that the Senate bill as written now, meets the test of no federal funding for abortion. We said that we wanted that preserved in the reconciliation bill not fixed. That is a misrepresentation of our position. We would not have taken the position we took if we were hoping for a fix. It had to be already in place and it is. Many legal scholars, the ABC News “Fact Check” also same the same thing. The provisions were negotiated by Senators Casey and Nelson, two of the most ardent pro-lifers out there.”
[The bishop also cites Rep. Thomas Periello's support of the language, calling him a "conservative pro-life Catholic."]
My response:
- Every reputable pro-life organization opposes the Senate language on abortion. “ABC” and “legal scholars” (none of them mentioned) are not reliable authorities – the combined research of the USCCB, National Right to Life Committee, pro-life organizations and dozens of knowledgeable bishops is. And the fact that pro-abortion Democrats are happy with the language and voted for it should tell us all we need to know about what it really will do in action.
- If Sister Keehan believes the “fix” is already in when it comes to abortion funding, why in CHA’s own letter to congress, do they ask for a “corretions bill” to be included to fix, among other things, this problem: “The bill should ensure that the final, overall health reform package will provide no federal funding for abortion.” This is clear proof that CHA knows the current bill is flawed! Cardinal George was right, and Sister Keehan is entirely banking on the hope that no one fact-checks her!
- Senators Casey and Nelson as pro-life examples?! Nelson not only caved, he betrayed his pro-life organization back home after accepting a $100 million pay-off for his home state. It is ludicrous to suggest that because they signed off on the language, we conscientious Catholics should! And Tom Perriello pro-life? Please – get the facts. Error can only exist in a vacuum of the truth.
- {added} The CHA has an un-admitted financial stake in this health care legislation passing (free money and subsidies from the government), which Rep. Kaptur (a pro-life democrat) alluded to today.
Second, Bryan Cones at U.S. Catholic – who loves stoking dissent against Church authority and confusing Catholics, blogs this today- claiming that Catholics can choose individual opinion over the combined Bishops:
One wonders which group has more clout: bishops or sisters? Given that the sisters provide the lion’s share of health care–few dioceses run their own hospitals–many would vote for the sisters. They certainly have a deeper well of goodwill to draw upon.
Cones asks the wrong question – the question is not “who has more clout?” (this is not a power game, after all), the question instead is “who has more authority?” That’s an easy one: bishops are shepherds of the Church, and their united prudential conclusion on this issue which effects thousands of unborn and post-born lives is this: Catholics cannot support the current legislation.
Cones’ claims about “who runs the hospitals” is also deeply misleading. Most Catholic hospitals have local bishops on their governing board. Most Catholic hospitals rely in part on the funds raised from Catholic bishops and their dioceses. Catholic hospitals, more importantly, derive and owe their Catholic identity and mission from their relationship with the local bishop, the shepherd of the local Church.
Papists – power and “good will” are not the source of authority in the Church – it is rather the grace given by Christ to bishops of the Church to lead the Church, especially in tough and confusing times.
Once again, Do not be mislead. Read these words from Archbishop Chaput, these words from Cardinal George, and my own humble summary offered which explains the Catholic case against this anti-life reform, and take action based on these sources of Episcopal and prudential guidance.
If my choice is between bishops who, wanting health care reform, cannot condone this health care reform, and liberal nuns, who wanting health care reform, will oppose bishops and lie about their actions to get it, I know where I would stand.
I would stand with the bishops against this anti-life bill. And I hope you would join them too.

The doctrine we are all required to believe and publically state – if we choose to be a Catholic – is contained in the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” which was first printed in the US in March of 2000.

Any Nuns who as a consequence of their actions – choose to kill unborn babies so some other can have insurance, and bring us closer to socialism are heretics.
Some say that this Bill to Law is built inside the concept of Social Grace. This two word phrase Social Grace, was used with the building block and design of the Titanic. There was only enough Life Boats to save the rich and famous and the poor was left to die and this included the poor children.
I am working as hard as I can to see all the Moral Value within this Bill. And I was right this Package of the Union of the Health Care Industry is a $100 Trillion Dollars per year system. The progressive tax forum is spread out over a 3 to ten year tax concept, in order to not over tax this system. Now this may work but the evidence of the basic failed tax system is still in failure and I noted this over 7 years ago and I do not understand why Government intervention did not take place to prevent the issue we face today. Then one day it came to me like a magical dream. With all this Social Grace within our Government Personal they did not have a clue how to fix this failed system with out taxing the Health Care Programs.
My myself I am impressed with the culture shared with the world between Democrats and Republicans, that the forgoing conclusion it to bring about diversity within the Public and bring harm to the Obama Family. Our Government officials have become a Public embarrassment and for most you no longer need to hold that seat of office. I ask this again, Is this what caused the murder of J.F.K ? Is the public really wanting to see the death of Obama our harm to his family over lies ? You see it would not matter if it was the Republicans that hold Office, so understand this, it is the voice of the People the Guide the destiny of this Country, it is only Officials that have lost the way.
As for theses Public Officials Of Government, what are they willing to put in to help balance the failed system ? A 10% per cent roll back in their pay is in order to adjust this economy, for every City, State and Federal Official.. And please do not make me share the constant failures by Officials.
As for this not being able to balance the budget not for another ten years, what if I told you it could be done in 3 years with a surplus of $1.2 Trillion dollars in Our Peoples Government Account. Hey there is a lot of smart people that are not of this Social Grace.
One thing, it is allowed by Law for Government to build jobs that profit for the Peoples Government Bank Account, { Our Bank Account within Our Government } as long as Government Officials do not profit off of this Job Conclusion of Concepts.
Because I am dyslectic I am miss under stood when I write. And it took me over a hour to write this with the help of A.I.. As I read more of this Health Care Bill 101 I noted it was based on the same concepts as what I offered to the Obama Administration over 7 months ago , but something was left out { because none of these issues released by Officials see into the economic condition at the home. A short re- cap, At average for people with Medicare Insurance, from what I have read is some people pay up to $500.00 per month, if insurance companies are forced to cover preexisting conditions at a rate that may increase coverage up to twice its yearly average on a scale that may effect other people coverages in order to maintain a dollar balance? { Re- cape }To help cover the sick and the poor is a FASC Concept that states that to build a Health Care Forum within our Government Institution is a Peoples right to do so and this is Protect Under the Constitution as a Human and Civil Right. So in plan words if the poor and the sick could only afford to pay $5.00 to $10.00 per month this would to bring a balance toward the broken tax system, to add up this number 32 million to 100 million sick and poor people x $5.00 per month. This will place back into the system $116 million $to 500 million dollars per month. The cause and effect of this will reduce the purposed Health Care Tax Forum, to bring about a reduced effect so not to a over burden system. Take my faith in this and almost all the poor and sick would be happy to pay in and help rebuild the United States failed tax system. Also To bring about a balance of trust lost between the people and Officials.
Under a Federal Health Care Group built by my friends and I, {You see the poor, as you see them}, as for them they see them self not poor, but of a different race of people and environment and have faith it that which was in the past that so many do not have a clue of what God and Country is all about. Those who you see as poor for most, we do not want to be took care of we wish to prosper so that our children will not be the next generation of the poor.

Now for those who do not know of me, my old Health Care page at the health care link on page 2 and 1 you will find the early writings by me, the miss spelled words and I am a bit dyslectic so statements are a bit off track. Frank Pavone, national director for Priests of Life, blasted the liberal nuns, saying their statement in support of the bill “does not represent 59,000 nuns; it represents approximately 59 nuns who signed it.” Pavone said while he’s not sure on what expert analysis the signers have relied, the bishops relied on the expertise of legal analysts. “It is absurd to advocate social justice while risking the expansion of a holocaust. The right to life is at the heart of social justice. We can’t pursue one by sacrificing the other.”

This is truly disturbing to see such divisions. I looked at the number of religious communities of Sisters who have endorsed the bill and I am amazed. I wonder if they truly understand the actual facts of this bill . .. .it does help the healthiness of the church or the laity .. .the Sisters have gone directly against the Bishops of this country with the exception of retired Bishop John McCarthy (Austin). It is really not understandable.
I was very saddened to hear about these misguided sisters issuing that statement.

I am horrified, horrified. My heart SANK when I saw Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary from Monroe, Michigan on that list. Those sisters taught at my elementary school back in the 80’s, and I cannot imagine those ladies would approve of this. Some have passed on now, and the rest I knew are now very elderly. It has to be a mistake. The sisters I knew were very strait-laced. I am in shock.
In a related note, my mom reported to me on Sunday, that she heard “some nuns” say the health care bill “was okay” “fine” and “not that bad.” I felt bad to correct her, but correct her, I did. It is not okay with the bishops, and these sisters (and other dissenters) are confusing people. Many Catholics hold sisters in high regard and would not dream that they would go against the truth. Very very sad.
