Video: Bishop Cordileone on health care

by Thomas Peters on March 10th, 2010

Bishop Salvatore (not Joseph) Cordileone gives a crystal clear presentation of the reasons why the bishops are supporting Stupak and his pro-life Democrat group:

Hopefully what the Bishop said in this interview bears a strong resemblance to what I’ve been writing on this issue for many months now.

And without getting into the cable news war debate, it’s nice to see a bishop asked some other question besides “what do you think the punishment for women should be if Roe v. Wade is overturned?” by an interviewer.

As if that’s what they spend their evenings thinking about.

The Roman Catholic Church has teachings about spem, eggs, the death pealty, war, poverty, and social justice. But it would seem that the heirarchy of the Roman Catholic Church only tries to enforce its teachings on politicians in the case of sperm and eggs. If you are a Roman Catholic Republican who looooooves the death pealty and loooooooooves war and hates social justice and believes that poverty results from lack of personal responsibility, the heirarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has no problem with your beliefs or votes. But if your a Democrat who believes in choice about sperm and eggs and are against the death penalty for social justice and against poverty, you may be denied communion. To an atheist outsider, this seems hypocritical, unfair, and likely to produce strains within the Church.

I think “what do you think the punishment for women should be if Roe v. Wade is overturned?” is a very relevant question when talking about the abortion issue, though not necessarily one that is relevant to ask a religious leader.

In El Salvador, women ARE put in jail for having abortions … it’s a very important issue to discuss, and one that I myself struggle with answering. Only the most callous person would enthusiastically want to put women in jail for having an abortion (especially when most women are encouraged by their parents/boyfriends/etc. to abort their children.)

Thomas Peters, I don’t think it’s far off the mark at all. The Nazis were pro-abortion. They also supported euthanasia which many Democrats do. And no the goal isn’t to make everyone Republicans but I think the Democratic Party should be consigned to the ashbin of history. It’s about a craven a group as there is.

comparing dems to Nazis is stupid and untrue. I have serious problems with the democrat platform and democrat leadership, but as Abp. Chaput says, the goal isn’t for everyone to become republicans, the goal is for both major parties to become pro-life.

Thomas Peters, would you belong to the Nazi party because they provided great benefits and wages to German workers (except for Jews). I think Agnes is correct.

wrong again. so many pro-life dems prove you wrong. they aren’t following the dem leadership on this one. to be fair, neither do Republicans. And that’s a good thing.

Thomas, I agree with your assertion that being pro-life should be a bipartisan position, but the facts are that if there is a D after the elected official’s name, they will put party first, not life. Sorry, but the Kennedys give them the escape hatch that they need.

@ Thomas-
The next time someone accuses you of being a stooge for the Republican party, I’ll remember your comment below.

Excellent job, Excellency!
Oakland must be a good training ground. This is the second shooting star in the East Bay sky in recent years. May our prayers and actions support his leadership.

Agnes, I strongly disagree. The primary reason the pro-abortion senate language is not being passed by the House of Representatives is because of pro-life Democrats. I agree that the leadership of the Democrat party is strongly pro-abortion, but there simply are other Democrats who are strongly pro-life. That’s a fact. Being pro-life should be a bi-partisan position.

There is no such thing as a pro life Democrat. No pro life person would be a member of the Party of Death, for any reason. The Democrat Party sold its soul a generation ago, and these so called pro life Dems are only window dressing.

The fact that the USCCB is still for this bill anyway and now pushing for amnesty only shows that they are simply the religious arm of the Party of Death. Their souls were sold long ago also. If this were not true, then abortion would be against the law in this country and America would still be pro life.
