AmP Book of the Month: Ireland’s Saint

by Thomas Peters on March 6th, 2010

March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day so what better way to prepare?

From the Publisher:

The most important biography of St. Patrick of Ireland! Explore Patrick’s place in history, the spread of Christianity beyond the Roman Empire, how Patrick first came to Ireland, the influence of the earlier Palladius on Patrick’s work, political and social conditions at that time, and the spiritual battles with the Druids. This 21st century edition now includes notes from other biographers, mystics, historians, and storytellers of Ireland.

Sounds like great craic.

Craic is an Irish (Gaelic) word for fun, enjoyment and jollification, lubricated by a modicum of alcohol. An example of its use might be “The craic was mighty” meaning “the social event was greatly enjoyed by all present”. Sometimes it’s used in the form “the craic was 90!”. That sounds like a reference to the price of an illegal cocaine derivative but isn’t. Cf. “craic was mighty” above. I’m just impressed that Thomas knows what the word means and when to use it! Buala bos!

On a slightly more serious point, I wonder how the author of this revised edition of Bury’s book gets over the lack of primary source material for Patrick’s life? We only have two writings from Patrick’s time, both explicitly claiming Patrick himself for their author. Everything else comes from a few hundred years later. Still it’s good to see Bury re-issued and updated.

Um…”KISS” me…oh, never mind.

God bless Ireland and the Irish; may they keep St. Patrick’s faith always.

You mean it’s not all about green-stained beer and plastic, made-in-China “Kill Me I’m Irish” buttons?

Craic?

As long as we’re talking about Ireland, can anyone recommend a good book on St. Bridget (or Brigid?), the abbess who was inadvertently ordained a bishop?
