Video Parody: Hitler Rails Against Pope Benedict

by Thomas Peters on February 12th, 2010

To get this parody you must understand that this famous scene from a german biographical movie about Hitler has been re-dubbed time and time again to hilarious effect. A brief search on YouTube reveal dozens and dozens of examples.

This is definitely Generation Y humor. Please do not take my posting of this (on off-beat news story day) as having anything to do with the historical tyrant and mass-murderer. It’s purely meant for a chuckle and to highlight the ingenuity of Devin Rose who created it:

I guess woodstock world youth days and constant scandals of JPII weren’t good enough for him. Rev up that cult of personality for the Holy Father again I guess.

But to laugh at the devil really makes him mad…that’s why Hitler parodies are so *great*!

Very clever! Mr. Rose brought up all His Holiness’ accomplishments since he became Pope!

As a faithful son of pope Benedict, I must say that I find this video in very poor taste. I understand that there are people in the Church opposed to Benedict’s approach, and I will be the first to defend the Holy Father against their critiques, but likening fellow Catholics to Hitler and the Nazis is completely contrary to the spirit of Christian charity and truth pope Benedict has urged upon the faithful. And this holds even if the parody has some amusing lines. If this is the way we intend to reach out to and reason with our disaffected brothers and sisters, we should be ashamed of ourselves. When are those of us who love the Church going to start loving our disaffected brothers and sisters enough to reason gently with them, and show them that what we enjoy in the Church is theirs to enjoy as well? To be instructed in the Tradition is not only a personal blessing, it is also a summons and a responsibility to share and hand on what we have received, in love, to all we meet, even and especially those we disagree with.
