Video preview: Dominican Sisters on Oprah

by Thomas Peters on February 8th, 2010

The Oprah show has released a teaser for the appearance tomorrow by the Dominican sisters:

Yikes – talk about a reminder of how big the gap is between the Catholic and secular world!

Let’s keep up our prayers for the sisters. I’m sure they will do us all – and the Gospel – proud.

Julie, I totally agree. They have been given a platform here and have the chance to share with the world the Gospel message. Just like Tim Tebow or Roger Staubach (of “Hail Mary” fame). When you get to have the open ear of the world, take it and preach Jesus. And yeah. Oprah is going to get hung up on sex. Great!! Gives them yet another fantastic opportunity to preach the Truth about God and sex! That they aren’t prudes for being nuns, but have lain their sexuality at the service of the Church just as priests do!
I would worry if it were a lesser order, but I’m confident these Brides of Christ will be magnificent.

Mary600,
Why not the Oprah Show? I suppose there were people who wondered, and said the same thing when Jesus was hanging out at the well with THAT woman.

Seriously, why the Oprah Show? Why?

Kudos to the sisters for courageously engaging the world…despite the profound ignorance of the culture of all things good, holy, true and beautiful. I’m sure the contrast between the sisters and the geishas will be stark. You go, sistas!

Only goes to show that Oprah continues to degenerate. Coupling nuns with geishas. Good grief.

Glad she’s shutting down her show. Seems it’s about time.

My revulsion only intensifies every time I see her. Holy Father Dominic, pray for Oprah!

uh… I hope this will be great, but I am worried how Oprah will spin it. I am not an Oprah fan AT ALL, so that might be part of it for me. I feel from the teaser, like it’s a bad idea to lump sisters in with geishas. Also, did you notice how many times she mentioned sex? Sheesh. If you can manage to make sex into a focal point on a segment with people who are celibate, then I guess I don’t know what else to say…. I really hope she treats them respectfully.

Well, as they say in marketing, no press is bad press. But you’re definitely right. The secular world has a warped view on the values of the Catholic Church and Oprah has proven that as a fact, i.e. “They gave up sex, a career and a family?!”.
Knowing the work and the mission of the Dominican Sisters, they will entice the viewers with their love for Christ. The entire world was so captured by Mother Teresa, and I can only imagine that the Sisters will have a similar impact.

“I thought you had to be a virgin to be a nun.” Ugh. I wonder if she thinks you have to be a virgin to be a priest too. Someone should really investigate what it takes to get a degree in ‘communications’ or ‘journalism.’

It’s a little disconcerting that she’s paired the Dominican Sisters with Geishas. But hey, when we have the opportunity to use a platform to preach the Gospel, I say Hurrah! And I’m so glad they picked a fabulous order.
(PS did you catch the ad at the end? As far as I’ve seen there is no evidence-hard evidence-that using a cell phone in the car causes accidents. Not like drinking and driving does. )

Considering that it’s airing with a bit about geishas, “yikes” is definitely a well-chosen word.

Teachable moment for the Sisters:
“Actually, Oprah, we are not nuns. We would properly be called, “Sisters.”
