Photo: A slight weather hiccup

by Thomas Peters on February 5th, 2010

I’m working from home today. Washington DC is peremptorily panicking because of the oncoming blizzard that could blanket us with 20-28 inches of snow (DC’s annual snowfall in a single storm).

Folks in the district are trying to come up with their favorite nickname for the storm … my favorites are snowmageddon, snownami and snowpocalypse, in no particular order.

I’m going to post a before-and-after picture of a street near where I live. Here’s the before:

Check back Sunday for the after! And say a prayer that everyone stays safe.

update – FRI 2PM: it’s so strange – there was so much wet snow coming down that, when it was still melting, there was water coming off the roof. It just started sticking and “frosting” the trees.

I vote for “snowpocalypse.” :) I can smile as I bask in a balmy 78 degree South Florida day, here.

Be safe.

Just call it Montreal gone south!

I lived on that street for two years during the blizzard of ‘78 when we skated on the C&O canal!!! Thanks for the memory.

So glad I don’t live in DC anymore. I can’t imagine that much snow there! Will say a prayer for everyone to stay safe and stay off the roads. This, too, shall pass.

Why not something more positive, like snowlapalooza?

Snobamageddon….”clearly” another warning from the gods of global warming.

Ugh. Sorry. Ben Affleck, not Matt Damon. Either way, not good.

I’m kinda partial to ’snowpocalypse’, given it’s biblical derivation, though ’snowmageddon’ comes in a close second. ‘Snowmageddon’ does, unfortunately call Matt Damon to mind, so ’snowpocalypse wins for me. Tom, just remember to stay at least 50 feet away from DC, VA, or MD drivers at all times!!! I just hope I can actually get out of my house in order to walk to mass on Sunday . . .

DC is nuts. I went to the Safeway this morning and it was packed. CVS was out of milk and other products. People down here are acting like the world is ending. Meanwhile, the falling snow is melting into nothing.

I think temperatures are typically several degrees warmer in cities (all the pavement soaking up heat from the sun, etc), and so snow tends to melt more quickly in them.

But I could be *totally* wrong…

I’ll be in DC February 21-24…I’ll be interested to see if any of these 2 feet of snow are left. As a Georgia boy, snopocalypse = .5″ of snow.

It’s interesting how little snow you have on the ground before the storm. I live 30 miles outside the city in VA and our ground is completely covered from the small snow from earlier in the week.
